Annual Meeting of the Oyster Pond Environmental Trust (OPET)

OPET Annual Meeting on July 16, 2002

Presentation - Links Between Watersheds and Coastal Bays of Cape Cod: A Case Study of Oyster Pond

OPET’s Annual Meeting took place Tuesday, July 26th 2002 at 7:30 pm at Sea Education Association, Woods Hole Rd and corner of Ransom Rd. The meeting was open to all OPET members and any other interested parties. The program began at 8 pm with the year’s overview and reports on OPET’s activities. After the OPET business was concluded keynote speaker Dr. Ivan Valiela, professor at Boston University's Marine Program (BUMP) in Woods Hole, spoke of his class' studies on Oyster Pond and surrounding areas. His talk focused on concern for nutrient loading from area septic systems and other issues related to the health of Oyster Pond.

Professor Valiela has taught at BUMP, located at the Marine Biological Laboratory campus, since 1969. He and his students have authored scores of scientific papers on the ecology of coastal waters, with particular emphasis on studies in Waquoit Bay, here in Falmouth. Dr. Valiela has published two books, most recently in 2001 by Oxford University Press: Doing Science: Design, Analysis, and Communication in Scientific Research. In recent years his class has focused on a local pond or estuary to help identify issues of concerns for local "stakeholders" and to conduct scientific studies that address those concerns. Last autumn his class studied Oyster Pond.
